THE COMPLETE VEGAN FOOD GUIDE TO PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MEXICO
I think we all know by now just how important veganism is. Everything from our planet, to our health, and compassion towards all beings, is wildly positively impacted by the success of the vegan movement. But, for both lifelong vegans and the more lightly vegan curious, traveling and finding good vegan food to eat can be a huge challenge.
You may think that Mexico is all rice and beans, aka: vegan heaven. But, sadly, meat is still a huge part of Mexican culture, and even rice and beans are often cooked with animal products. So, today I thought I would share my vegan suggestions for the popular tourist destination of Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Let’s get started!
Craving your hometown classics on your tropical adventure!? You’re in luck! From vegan omelets, to breakfast bagels, to paninis, salads, and more; The Pitted Date is sure to satisfy any appetite.
MUST TRY: Savory Crepe - Gluten free crepe filled with vegan egg, mushrooms, spinach, asparagus & vegan mozzarella. (There’s a couple sides available, but I recommend the seasoned home-style potatoes for sure)
Craving something a little more healthy!? Fresco Habito is your place. From the lush natural decor, to the rows and rows of vegan superfoods, you are sure to find your inner healthy jungle goddess. Indulge in countless fruit super bowls, more savory buddha bowls, toasts, juices and more! Plus, it’s super digital nomad friendly and the wifi is great, for those who take their work on the go.
MUST TRY: Matcha Bowl - Mango, Banana, Matcha, Moringa, Spinach, and Date Base — topped with Strawberries, Seasonal Fruit, Oats, Quinoa Puffs, Grated Coconut, and Granola. AMAZING.
La Senda was one of the first vegan restaurants in Playa Del Carmen, and that experience definitely pays off. They offer tons of authentic Mexican options, completely veganized. They also have amazing breakfast options, burgers, salads, and more. Plus, they are probably the most economical of all the vegan restaurants, sticking to pretty local rates, which is rare in a touristy town like Playa.
MUST TRY: Crepa Dulce - Oat crepe, filled with Bananas, Berry Jam and Cacao Sauce. (I know, another crepe. But trust me, this one blew my mind)
Escape from the hustle and bustle into your tropical oasis. Aloha Raw Bar is fully stoked with everything you could need to feel happy and healthy, even on the rainiest of days. They make some of the most simply beautiful smoothie bowls with all local ingredients. They also carry vegan staples such as Avocado Toast, Matcha, and even Protein Waffles.
MUST TRY: While everything on Aloha Raw Bar’s ever-changing menu is amazing. I especially loved to pair their amazing Kombucha, made in house, with my other vegan treats (usually an Acaì Bowl).
By far the most surprising vegan find in Playa Del Carmen. This 50s Style, Veganized American Diner is one for the vegan bucket list. If you’re really craving classic junk food, this is your place. You can find: almost any burger you could ever crave, classic, chicken, fish etc. As well as classics such as, fries, corn dogs, milkshakes and more!
MUST TRY: Two Words…Snickers Milkshake. Need I say more?
PS: You can't miss the bathroom in this place. I know, it sounds weird. But trust me, it’s 100% worth it. You'll see.
Chou Chou Cafe was my home away from home in my time in Playa Del Carmen. While not fully vegan, this eco-cafe’s family-centric community vibe is enough to keep you coming back again and again. I met some of my most amazing friends, after just short encounters at Chou Chou Cafe. This place breeds friendship….and amazing food, coffee and french baked goods.
MUST TRY: Provencal Sandwich - Portobello Mushrooms, Tomatoes, Arugula, Avocado, and Black Olive Tapenade - all on a vegan French Baguette.
